Review and thoughts beneath:

Platform: Windows PC (Steam)

Duration: 110 hours to achieve enlightenment – 70 Hours played at time of review below, notwithstanding lots to discover!

What is it? Don't permit Autonaughts' cutesy aesthetics fool yous, Autonaughts is a hardcore colonisation and crafting sim. Starting with nothing, yous build upward your colony automating activities to robots (which you also craft). Nearly everything can be automatic, and programming is simple: The robots just re-create what yous evidence them (and and so you insert repeat and provisional loops). Programming is all washed keyboard free (mouse and CTRL key only required). The GUI is excellent.

The "tutorial" holds your hand for the outset hour and teaches you lot the basics. You are then left on your own to "reach the stars". There are objectives which yous tin utilize to guide your colony's development, but actually Autonaughts is ane giant sandbox where yous can practice whatever you lot like. There is no clock, no time pressure. Only your own desire will drive you to be as efficient as possible and discover and apply new technologies.

Warning: Autonaughts is highly addictive. I starting time playing at 7pm and before I know it, it's midnight! Like "just ane more turn games", there is always merely one (or more) more things I want to attain before endmost down for the night.

Me(ss)tropolis – My out of control messy urban center

What makes Autonaughts an first-class game:

Lots of option. The crafting tree is huge and deep. Choose the path you like (ie cotton wool, wool or reed for clothing) and run with it. Or alter your mind, or practise all three, the choice is yours! Lots of basic resources including water, sand, trees, animals, fruit, flowers, fe, coal, rock, bees, fish, chickens... and so every bit your civilisation advances you'll also kickoff to need power (ie Windmills). I've still got lots to find!

Lots of customised options. Various clothing and robot variants tin be used to brand a wonderful looking colony. None is required, but all is optional. It's there if you want it. Information technology's a sandbox.

Fantabulous manual. The in-game encyclopaedia is very user friendly. If you want to brand anything, you tin wait at the crafting formula and click through the ingredients to find out where those ingredients come from. Therefore, you tin can easily trace the path to the end product you want.

"I just fabricated butter!" Equally mentioned, the crafting tree is huge. It'due south also filled with great delights when you finally make something you lot've been striving for. The crafting is also very logical, ie a handcart uses ii wheels, a wheelbarrow only needs ane. Although everything required is displayed with a wave over of the mouse. You'll soon exist crafting wonderfully complex stuff. The biggest items, similar the mansion, are congenital stage by stage. There are fifty-fifty wonders that tin exist made (like the seven wonders of the earth), these have practical uses, so I recommend building them when you have a chance.

Programming is very uncomplicated. You can utilise data disks to transfer mutual programs, or ane of the wonders for a programming database. I use this for my "recharging" robots. It's also easy to re-program robots. Higher quality bots are fifty-fifty easier to alter programs (like the marking 2 bots which innovate a "change target" button).

Trade and Structure Centre – Creating all those things you need

Practically nothing is permanent/wasted. Made a mistake, but move it! You can move stuff after its built to rearrange. The "delete" structure, moves it into your inventory and then you can pop information technology down wherever you similar. This is a primal design element as you can make a huge workshop for all your crafting needs, then movement the finished product to where you want information technology. RE-program robots completing obsolete tasks, or simply change the target of their actions.

Before long, you volition be expanding to your hearts delight and observe much meliorate ways of doing things. No need to "restart the game", just let your first attempt piece of work in the corner while yous rebuild meliorate somewhere else. Then you can pick up and re-use those workbenches, crates etc.

70 hours in, I've just about to bake my beginning pumpkin pie and feed it to my level v colonists. Even so lots to notice and a few more levels to go. (I've only made butter, which I need to make the pastry). I've besides just set up my milking shed and I'grand about to fix a shearing shed. I then need to expand my toy manufacturing plant, and by then I should have my next enquiry completed opening up another layer of options. I really should set up some more line-fishing. What should I exercise with all this coal I've been mining? A quick wait at the encyclopaedia says trains are withal coming, so I'grand certain I'll need it to power them! Only. Lovin. It.

Using a steam train late game to deliver rocks from far away lands

Highly recommended if you savor efficiency engines and constantly juggling an increasingly circuitous motorcar made of 100s of moving parts (bots).

Note:I finished the game later 110 hours. The final few hours were the simply "grindy" scrap, but can exist seen more than as a take chances to permit your automated manufacturing plant run and see if information technology can continue sustainably. You could take this time to tidy your product, found flowers, tailor fancy outfits, customise your bots. I only permit it run for an 60 minutes or two while I was learning a new boardgame whistle
